Posting About AMA (African) Churches
on Social Media

If you use the tags we describe below in your posts, those posts will be included in the searches when people follow the links from our pages.
The AMA's social media campaign is #followafrica. However, because no simple hashtag is ours exclusively, it is important to include other hashtags as well. At a minimum, people should use #followafrica #amaafrica #ama #ama<country>.

Also consider using #ama<region> and #ama<city> (for Instagram) or #<country>, #<region>, and #<city> (for Facebook and Twitter) as described below.

When we choose the hashtags (Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter) or the keywords (YouTube) for a post, we are thinking carefully about how people are going to search for these posts.

Some people are going to be looking for our posts. They will use very specific hashtags (or "#tags") like #followafrica #ama #amaafrica #amawestafrica #amanigeria #amalagos. Here at www.amaafrica.org, we have pages for each church/city (e.g. #amalagos), each country (e.g. #amanigeria), and each region of Africa (#westafrica, #frenchwestafrica, #eastafrica, or #southernafrica).

However, other people are going to be searching for God, and they don't know who we are. They will use general #tags like #nairobi #church or #cotedivoire #chretiens. (We translate general #tags into local languages, but we don't need to translate the specific #tags.)

So if disciples all over Africa make a little extra effort to put the tags described here on their posts, your posts will be easy to find, and they will get more likes.

YouTube posts should use the same #tags as Facebook, but without the "#" symbols before each keyword.

In addition, it is very helpful on Facebook or Twitter to include the URL to the AMA Website (www.amaafrica.org/news). Please note that if you use the whole URL (https://www.amaafrica.org/news) in a Facebook post, it will take over your post as though you were posting the whole web page instead of just providing a link. That is why we recommend just including the domain after the keywords (www.amaafrica.org/news) instead of the entire URL. (There is no use putting a URL in an Instagram post.)

If you are in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos, or Abidjan, you can look below and copy and paste the appropriate hashtags into your posts. If you are not, find the closest set and adapt it for your city and country. You may want to make a "note" on your phone with all of the hashtags you use most, adapted for your city and country. Then you can copy and paste the hashtags from that note every time you post. If you create a post that applies to multiple cities, please include the hashtags for each city.

Facebook

When people search on Facebook, they can use multiple #tags, so the posts they find are the ones that use all of them. So if we want to be found, we can use a few #tags which are distinct when used in combination.
Facebook tries to guess what your #tags mean, so it might find posts that don't match exactly.
There is no limit to the number of #tags you may use in a post.

Instagram

When people search on Instagram, they can only use a single #tag, so the posts they find are the ones that include that exact #tag. So if we want to be found, we must use more distinct #tags.
There is no limit to the number of #tags you may use in a post.
When using the Instagram app to cross-post to Facebook, we use #tags that are good for both sites.
When a person begins to search for a #tag on Instagram, they see suggestions for all #tags that start with that #tag. This is why we recommend the #amaafrica, #amaafrica<country>, #amaafrica<city>, and #amaafrica<region> tags.

Twitter

When people search on Twitter, they can use multiple #tags, so the tweets they find are the ones that use all of them. So if we want to be found, we can use a few #tags which are distinct when used in combination.
There is a practical limit to the number of #tags you can use in a tweet because of the max length of a tweet. So try to use the first five keywords and the AMA URL. Then if possible use the rest.
